How to Keep Your Bulldog Healthy

Bulldogs are one of the most lovable—though stubborn—dog breeds. They’re known for their signature wrinkles and charming personalities. But beneath those adorable faces lies a breed with specific health needs that require your attention. Your furry best friend deserves a long, healthy life full of playing, cuddles, and joy. So, taking the time to determine your buddy’s breed-specific needs is a big priority.

To keep your bulldog thriving for years to come, Broadway Veterinary Hospital is here to provide valuable insight and education for bulldog owners. We specialize in veterinary care for bulldogs, so you know our advice is tailored on extensive education and experience. If you need help keeping your bulldog healthy and happy, we would happily schedule an appointment for you and your pup.

Tips and Recommendations for Giving Your Bulldog a Healthy Life

Bulldogs require extra care that other dog breed owners often don’t recognize, but once you know what steps to take, you’ll have the confidence and knowledge to give them the best life possible. The following are just a few recommendations for bulldog owners:

Give Your Pup Healthy and Nutritional Food

Bulldogs have significant nutritional needs. It’s important to speak with your vet about what food brands would work best for your dog, find guidelines for caloric intake, and iron out a good feeding schedule.

Some vets recommend changing your bully’s food as infrequently as possible. Additionally, iHeartDogs says bulldog puppies need about 50 to 60 calories per pound of body weight every day. On the other hand, healthy adult bulldogs need approximately 40 to 50 calories per pound per day.

Be Aware of Genetic Predispositions

Most commonly, bulldogs are prone to obesity, cardiac disease, and respiratory disease. However, your pup may also have other predispositions. Some bulldogs are prone to bone, spine, skin, and eye problems. If you have concerns about your bulldog’s genetic and health history, please bring them to your Broadway Veterinary Hospital vet.

Healthy Hygiene Habits

Bulldogs, much like other breeds with wrinkled skin, will need additional hygiene care. These wrinkles can trap moisture and pose a risk for fungal infections, so we encourage you to get your hands on dog-friendly wipes for wrinkly pups.

Learn Your Bulldog’s Normal

Every bulldog will wheeze, have gas, and slobber. However, a change in your pup’s bodily function may indicate a more serious underlying issue. In addition to taking your dog to the vet whenever you notice something wrong, do your due diligence and pay attention to your pup’s typical habits and how they might change.

Go on Walks

Bulldogs are somewhat well-known for being stubborn and lazy, as they’d likely rather cuddle on the couch with you than go for a run. Regardless, your dog should go on at least a short walk. When your pup doesn’t want to go any further, don’t drag them around. It’s okay to turn around and head back home, even if the walk is short.

Meet Your Pup’s Emotional Needs

Bulldogs are companion animals who want and need your emotional connection and love. Give your bully plenty of cuddles and playtime. Remember that your pup may also be quiet, so don’t forget about them and prioritize their needs whenever you’re at home.

Consider Their Dental Health

Some bulldogs are more prone to dental issues and diseases than other breeds, so we encourage you to clean them regularly at home. Talk to your vet about dental care for your pup, and you may extend your furry buddy’s life by up to three years!

Spay or Neuter Your Furry Friend

Spaying and neutering your bulldog, much like every other dog breed, can dramatically reduce the chance your pup will get certain cancers. It also reduces the likelihood of accidentally getting surprise litters on your hands. Additionally, this allows your vets to evaluate other important health factors while your pup is under anesthesia.
